Values are a set of beliefs that guide our behaviour.
They are the foundation for our decisions and actions, and help us to make sense of the world around us. Values shape how we spend our time, what we think is important, and why we do things.
Understanding your values is a key part of personal development because it helps you to understand why you behave in certain ways, what is important to you, and how your behaviour affects other people in your life. This can help you to make better decisions about careers or relationships.
Knowing what matters to you can help you recognise the choices and compromises inside a decision. It doesn’t make those decisions easy, but it gives you something to work with beyond what you feel you ought to do.
Exploring what matters at work
Think of a recent decision that felt difficult. What mattered to you in that moment? Were you protecting time, independence, a relationship or the quality of your work? Sometimes the tension comes from two things you value pulling in different directions.
If that tension is showing up in your career choices or working relationships, it is something we can explore through coaching and mentoring. You don’t need to arrive with a list of values already worked out.
